China Starts Building World’s First Commercial Underwater Data Center with Performance Equal to 6 Million PCs

China is pioneering the development of what appears to be the world’s first commercial underwater data center off the coast of Sanya, a city south of Hainan Island.

The project involves deploying watertight data storage units on the sea floor, with each unit capable of processing more than four million high-definition images in 30 seconds.

The estimated performance is said to be equivalent to approximately 60,000 regular computers working in unison.

The companies behind the initiative plan to install a hundred units over the next five years, with each unit weighing 1,300 tons.

Despite the challenges of transporting and submerging these units, they are designed to last 25 years and withstand natural phenomena.
